Kibble has been marketed as “dog food” since 1956 . . .
and though nothing could be more misleading, it has become a multi-billion dollar industry. But as dog owners come to understand that kibble is not species-appropriate nutrition for their beloved dogs, the pet food industry is doing its best to scare owners away from feeding raw by engaging veterinarians and "experts" to promote a variety of myths and fictions. In other words, most dietary recommendations for our dogs are paid for by kibble manufacturers.
Myths & Fictions about feeding raw:
Fact: Raw meat can contain pathogens, the same pathogens you’re exposed to if you fry a burger, grill a steak or handle any raw meat. So be sure to wipe down your countertops and wash your hands after serving raw meals. Reason should tell you that an animal that eats poop can safely eat raw meat.
Fact: The only food our pets get are the foods we feed them. So, even kibble can be better than not eating at all. If you’ve read any labels on commercial "raw meals" you know that the ingredients are labeled, "crude", meaning that the source of the ingredient need not be revealed. Worse, the majority of commercial dog food brands are primarily milled grains or raw vegetables. Canines don't have the enzymes to breakdown cellulose or carbohydrates. And, as any smart mother knows; if you want to see how your "baby" is doing on the meals you provide, check their stool. A canine’s perfect stool should look like firm donut holes, not mushy Tootsie RollsTM or soft-serve ice cream. An ideal stool is produced by a diet of raw muscle, secreting organs, bone, marrow and fermented plants.
Fact: Worms are not native to raw meat. If raw meat is infested with worms, either the livestock was attacked by parasites prior to being harvested or the harvested meat was left uncovered, attracting flies or other pests that lay their eggs in animal protein.
Fact: Salmonella and e-coli infections in livestock are the result of feeding corn and other grains to animals that evolved eating grasses. It’s the main reason why factory-farmed cattle are given antibiotics. Feeding your pet muscle and organs from factory-farmed animals, regularly will reduce it's immunity to all infections. For that same reason, informed consumers purchase 100% grass-fed, antibiotic-free meats for themselves.
Fact: Dogs are carnivores, so they will not turn into feral beasts from eating a species-appropriate diet.
